Chapter 17

I Discovered (Eureka!)

The doctors sent Patty home on Friday. Her time in the hospital left her weak and confined to a wheelchair. An in-home nurse was scheduled to come every evening to monitor Patty’s medications and sit with her through the night. Lucy hired additional help at the flower shop in order to spend more time with her mother during the day, and Jake drove down every evening after work.

Mr. Summers’s military benefits provided excellent care for his wife. Once Patty moved home, her spirits improved. She still took frequent naps, but she also smiled more. She was a living example of the glass-is-half-full outlook. Despite her discomfort and uncertain future, she found joy in simple things. Jake and his family remained in my prayers. Patty’s prognosis was not good, but I prayed that if it was God’s will, he would grant a miracle.

On Patty’s third day home, I got a call from Jake. “Are you going to your family dinner today?” he asked.

I wasn’t sure what answer he wanted, so I tried to cover all the bases in my response. “I thought your family would want some time alone, so yeah, I was going to head to my parents’.” I paused, then said, “But I can change things around if you need me to.”

“No, I actually hoped to ask your mom for a favor,” Jake said.

“Okay.” I laughed, suddenly curious. “What’s up?”

“My mom’s asking for something sweet, and I know she loved those cookies your mom sent. Do you know if she’s made any lately?”This was a wish I could grant. “My mom is a cookie master. If she doesn’t have any on hand, she can whip them up pretty quickly.”

“You don’t think it would be a problem?” Jake asked.

“Jake, you’re talking about a woman who would rather run out of toilet paper than chocolate chips. Trust me; it’s no problem.”

“Thanks, Paige. You’re the best,” he said.

“We’ll give my mom the credit on this one,” I said.

“Tell her she’s pretty cool too.”

“Deal. I’ll bring them by later.”

As I expected, Mom had no qualms about whipping up a batch of cookies. When I arrived for dinner, she had finished the dough and was ready to start baking.

“Can you scoop the cookies?” Mom asked.

I wasn’t the best baker, but I could do the manual labor. I washed my hands and began working next to Mom. She stirred a pot of soup on the stove and told me she’d doubled the recipe so I could take some to Jake’s family.

“It’s always nice to have an easy meal in the fridge,” Mom said. “I figured I’d send some rolls as well.”

I placed another scoop of cookie dough onto the pan, set down the spoon, then walked behind my mom and wrapped my arms around her. “Thanks, Mom.” I planned to say more, to tell Mom how much her gesture meant, but I got choked up and stood there, silently blinking back my emotions.

Mom didn’t speak either. She let the spoon drop against the side of the pot and raised her arms to wrap them around mine.
